Amazon, as an eCommerce giant, has excellent strategies to make the optimal user-experience at every bit of the purchase. Amazon backorder mode is generally considered as one of the best practices for amazon sellers. Following the way, the sellers can backorder the items on amazon.

Most of the products are registered as back-ordered on this platform, which means the seller is still accepting the order for this particular product. Even though the product is not still fulfillable and will be dispatched at later specified dates.

Amazon introduced this feature for the comfort of their seller; even the product other than the BMVD product is out of stock, the seller can list the order for the item. However, to confirm the Amazon backorder product, the seller has to enter the restock date for the buyers’ convenience and the expected time of getting the product delivered.

In this piece of writing, we will discuss the pros and cons associated with the strategy of Amazon backorder and how to check its status. So, let’s get started.

How do I list a back-ordered product?

Generally, it is considered a good practice to have the product in stock from a business perspective. This business streak will help you increase the sale and profit and earn a few loyal customers. Moreover, Amazon adores the seller having the up to date stock and consistent sales history. That works in favor of the seller.

But, not all the time, a seller can continue this habit, and also amazon understands this fact. So, amazon updates the backorder feature in its business strategy that allows the sellers to book the orders even though they are out of stock. The seller store clearly depicts that the item is currently not available and will be restocked at a particular date. It becomes easy for the buyer to decide either to place an order or not.

Can the seller backorder any item?

Amazon has yet introduced the many strategic features favoring the sellers, but these are not out of regulations. Amazon gives the facility to backorder most of the items, but this is not the thing as the seller can backorder the item only if the restock date is within the 30 days of the current date.

The seller is bound to ship the product within 30 days of receiving the order; otherwise, the seller cannot backorder the item if it is not going to restocked within the 30 days of order listing. Further, the backorder limit for BMVD products is two days, and the BMVD stocks can’t be back-ordered if the seller is unable to ship the item within two days.

Also, anything fulfilled through the FBA program can’t be back-ordered as their availability is based on whether they are available in the amazon affiliate center or not. So, before back-ordering any item, make sure you are about to restock that soon.

Can a Back-ordered Item Win the Buy Box?

A backorder item can get the buy box, which makes the backorder feature different from the general out of stock status.

Usually, when the item is out of stock, the buy box is won by the seller, who has the store’s items. But, in the Amazon backorder, the situation is different. The seller can win this even he has the products out of stock if the customer knows and gets the ordered product on the prescribed date by the seller.

Commonly, Amazon favors the Sellers with a more massive current inventory, regular sales, and a strong stock history. These sellers may get a more significant Buy Box share. The immediately fulfillable items are encouraged at a robust platform like amazon.

How Does a Seller List a Product as a Backorder?

Amazon has depicted the whole procedure on Amazon Seller Central. The seller has to put the confirm restock date for the currently out of stock. That will make buyers easy and quick if you are up to organize the backorder products using an inventory file upload. You can follow this procedure.

  • Download the category-specific inventory file template.
  • Enter the date in the Restock Date column showing when the product will be back in stock. Fill up the empty columns, including SKU, Item Price, Quantity, and partial Update in the Update Delete column.
  • In your seller account, select Add Products via Upload from the Inventory tab.
  • On the Add Products via Upload page, upload your inventory file.

Now, you are on your way to see the product inventory file in your seller account.

Is Back Ordering Items the Solution for Amazon Business?

Amazon Backorder strategy might be looking so compelling. It seems like an ideal solution for expanding the sale and bottom line, especially at peak selling periods. However, it is not a go-to solution to prevent losing the customer at the time when your supplier has let you down or you oversight with your inventory management.

Several Amazon sellers have spoken up about this strategy, and dont appreciate the backorder products. They have explained even the seller has backorder the item even then amazon withstand it and will chasten you. Even though the customer is okay with this to wait for the item, Amazon considers this as of late shipping and that counts as a negative customer experience.

If the sellers are doing enough backorder continually, amazon will take action by suspending the seller account. Furthermore, the amazon backorder will impact your late shipment rate and on-time delivery score.

So, it preferably looks better to cancel the order instead of backorder it.

Bottom Line: Amazon Backorder

Amazon’s backorder strategy is good enough if the sellers are using it wisely. It might be a source of increasing the profit and sale ratio, but at the same time, you need to be keen enough to meet the deadlines. If you are not shipping the products at the mentioned restock date, you are losing the customers and Amazon’s trust.

So, before deciding the backorders, make sure you can efficiently manage it. Better to cancel the order instead of providing a poor customer experience. Amazon doesn’t encourage this practice in any case.  This eCommerce giant doesn’t compromise at its business ethos.
